🧩 Autism & ADHD

Driving lessons for people with Autism and ADHD 🧩⚡

People with ADHD or ADD may experience varying degrees of attention and concentration problems. This can sometimes make driving more difficult. At our driving school, we understand these challenges and provide a patient and personalized approach, so you can feel comfortable and safe behind the wheel.

What should you know about driving with ADHD or ADD?

It's important to recognize and manage your symptoms to drive safely. There are some rules and steps you need to follow to drive with ADHD or ADD, and we're happy to help you through this process.

Do I have to disclose my ADHD or ADD when I take my driving test?

Yes, if you're taking your first driving test, you'll need to complete a Health Declaration . This declaration indicates that you have ADHD or ADD. Always complete this declaration truthfully so the CBR (Central Office for Motor Vehicle Driver Testing) can properly guide you. After completing the Health Declaration, you'll receive a referral to an independent psychiatrist. The psychiatrist will examine you and write a report for the CBR. This process can take some time, so be sure to start on time.

For more information about submitting your Health Declaration, visit the CBR page on ADHD and ADD .

What do you need to know in advance?

If you were diagnosed with ADHD or ADD as a child, but your treatment was discontinued before your 16th birthday, please write "NO" on your health declaration. You will then not be required to undergo a medical examination or driving test.

What is involved?

We recommend being honest with your driving instructor. This allows us to provide you with the best possible support during your driving lessons. It's also wise to submit your Health Declaration on time , as processing it at the CBR can take some time.

After approval by an independent medical specialist, a driving test always follows. It's important to only take this driving test after approximately 20 lessons . This ensures you have gained sufficient experience before your driving skills are assessed.

Inspection and driving test

If the CBR (Central Office for Motor Vehicle Driver Testing) needs more information about your driving skills, they can refer you for a medical examination or driving test. The examination is conducted by a medical specialist experienced in ADHD or ADD. The driving test is not an exam, but an assessment of how ADHD or ADD affects your driving behavior.

What is a driving test?

A driving test is a practical assessment by an expert from the CBR (Central Office for Motor Vehicle Driver Testing). The examiner looks at things like:

  • Staying focused : How do you stay focused during the ride?
  • Focused attention : Can you distinguish between important and less important matters?
  • Dividing attention : Can you divide your attention between operating and driving the car?
  • Decision-making : Do you make well-considered decisions without endangering yourself or other traffic?

Medication and driving

Medications like dexamphetamine and methylphenidate (e.g., Ritalin ) are often prescribed to people with ADHD or ADD. It's important to know that medication can affect your driving ability. Some medications can improve your concentration, but it's always a good idea to discuss this with your doctor. The CBR (Central Office for Motor Vehicle Driver Testing) can also assess whether your medication affects your driving ability and whether adjustments are needed.
